Sidewalks do not make for safer bicycle riding

Bicycles and motor vehicles seem to co-exist much too uneasily for the likes of some California bike riders. Why ride in the street when you can take the sidewalk instead? While some bicyclists view this as a safer option, there are reasons why taking to the sidewalk is not necessarily the better choice and as NPR points out, sidewalk riding may actually increase some risks of catastrophic injury.

Flying the dangerous skies

Most California residents are familiar with the sound and sight of helicopters. Various government entities and private corporations use these vehicles to patrol the state's highways, train military personnel, conduct tours and respond to medical emergencies. Helicopters are generally safe, but mistakes in operation or problems with design, maintenance and manufacturing have the potential for catastrophic consequences.

Can car accidents cause vision trauma?

Not every car accident in Redwood City results in death. Serious motor vehicle collisions often lead to severe and life-threatening injuries, such as vision loss. According to FindLaw, vision disturbances are often associated with traumatic brain injuries. Vision disturbances can also occur from direct trauma to the eye area. Not all affected accident victims notice problems with their vision right away; some of them experience delayed symptoms.

Motorcyclists risk traumatic brain injuries when they ride

There is no denying that motorcyclists are at a greater risk of harm when they are on the roads than other motorists. Many people overlook the safety of motorcycle passengers. Reuters Health states that “riders are less likely to end up with traumatic brain injuries than their passengers. The risk is much higher when they do not wear helmets and consume alcohol before riding. Though there are other factors that affect the type and extent of injuries accident victims sustain, motorcycles have fewer vehicle structures to shield operators and riders from accident debris, the road and other vehicles.

Tesla and the NTSB disagree on release of crash information

The federal government takes the public's safety on the roadways of California and across the country extremely seriously. When innovative vehicles are involved in crashes, it often results in an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board, a government agency that uses its findings to prompt safety regulations from legislators and other governing bodies. Auto manufacturers typically also conduct their own investigations, and the approaches used may not be compatible.

Drivers with ADHD more likely to end up serious car accidents

One common cause of Redwood City area car accidents that many people might not know about is attention deficit disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a condition that makes it hard for sufferers to control their impulses and pay attention. Operating a vehicle requires the driver to focus. Motorists who have ADHD find it hard to stay focused on driving. According to WebMD, drivers who have attention deficit disorder have a “50 percent higher chance of ending up in serious motor vehicle accidents.”

How do I know if I have a concussion after a car accident?

Car accidents are a major source of injury in the Redwood City area and across the country. The sudden and forceful impact often causes trauma to the head. It is not uncommon for people in car accidents to end up with concussions and traumatic brain injuries. According to Brainline.org, in 2013, the leading cause of hospitalization for individuals between the ages of 15 and 44 years old who ended up with concussions and nonfatal traumatic brain injuries was car accidents.

California cyclist killed in violent collision, driver charged

When California motorists are driving in an area that is also used by pedestrians and bicyclists, it is imperative that they use extra caution and vigilance to prevent unnecessary tragedies. However, there are times when the inevitable happens and a bicyclist is injured because a driver has failed to pay attention or is driving recklessly without regard for the safety of others. In these situations, the often life-altering injuries sustained by the cyclist are excruciatingly devastating considering the circumstances could have been completely avoided.

How can you help a child who has suffered a brain injury?

For many California parents, there is little as disconcerting as hearing that your child has been involved in an accident. Because children are especially vulnerable, it can be difficult to assess how to best help them cope with a significant injury. Brain injuries for example, can require extensive time and resources to correct and heal and often have long-lasting effects on a child's personality, ability to do certain things and overall well-being. Fortunately, there are things you can do to provide support and encouragement and give your child the best chance at an effective recovery.

The dangers of teens in the driver’s seat and how to avoid them

Many people in the Redwood City area are not aware of the impact age and experience can have on driving skills and abilities. Teenagers are not the most experienced or knowledgeable drivers. Their age and lack of experience often cause car accidents that result in injuries and death. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, Highway Loss Data Institute, adolescents who are between the ages of 16 and 19 have the highest crash rate amongst teenage drivers.
