What appliances are the most dangerous in your home?

With all the big names that manufacture appliances and all the money that they spend on advertising their products, you'd think that they'd spend extensive amounts of time testing them. It doesn't appear that they do though. This is why homeowners often get hurt when using these products.

Data compiled by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows that certain household appliances put homeowners at a higher risk of being injured in fires than others.

CPSC data shows that between 2002 and 2009, there were at least 44,708 homeowners that had the misfortune of having a fire ignite in their kitchens due to an electric or gas stove malfunction. Many of these incidents were later attributed to the stoves either turning on by themselves or being left unattended.

That same data shows that dryers resulted in the second largest number of house fires during that same time frame. Most of these were either caused by gas leaks or dryer vent blockages.

The household appliance that caused the third leading number of fires was a microwave. These fires often happened because the units cut on without anything being in them.

Refrigerator fires took fourth place. There were at least 1,512 refrigerators that caught fire in individuals' homes between 2002 and 2009. Many of these fires were ignited because the light bulb remained on even once the door was shut, or there was a switch that short-circuited.

Toasters, toaster ovens, dishwashers and washing machines rounded out the list for the top seven household appliances that are most apt to malfunction and cause a household fire by the CPSC.

If you or a loved one were injured by an improperly functioning piece of equipment such as these in your house, then you may be entitled to compensation for your injuries. An attorney here in Redwood City can let you know how California law allows you to sue manufacturers when their defective product hurts you.
