Avoid these 3 driving distractions

How many driving distractions are there? You may instantly think that there have to be hundreds. You've seen people texting, taking pictures, talking to passengers, eating food, drinking coffee, dealing with kids, making phone calls and much more. Off the top of your head, you can think of a few dozen distractions right away.

That is true, and part of the problem with distracted driving is that it does take so many forms. This makes it a risk for all drivers, even those who turn off their phones or decide to always stop and eat, rather than eating in the car. Removing one behavior is wise, but there are many other distractions to choose from.

Even so, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention do note that most distractions fall into three main categories. If you can avoid these three, you can also avoid all of the actions listed above -- and many more. The categories are:

  1. Visual distractions
  2. Manual distractions
  3. Cognitive distractions

A lot of the specific actions you think of fit into these categories. Turning to talk to children in the back seat is a visual distraction, as you stop looking at the road. Making a phone call is a cognitive distraction, as you think about the call, even if you still look at the road and hold the steering wheel. Eating and driving is a manual distraction since you need at least one hand for your meal.

Even if you avoid these issues, you know that all other drivers will not do so. If they cause accidents that put you in the hospital, you need to know what legal rights you have.
