A pedestrian is struck and killed by a bus driver in Redwood City

A San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans) bus driver struck and killed a pedestrian in Redwood City during morning rush hour on Dec. 12. The crash happened at the intersection of El Camino Real and James Avenue just before 8:47 a.m. The bus driver was traveling southbound from the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) stop in Daly City to the transit center in Palo Alto when the incident occurred.

Four passengers were riding on the bus at the time the crash occurred. None of them suffered any injuries in the crash though. The 70-year-old female pedestrian wasn’t as lucky though. She died on impact.

Many young people witnessed the aftermath of the crash as the accident occurred just feet from Sequoia High School’s campus. A portion of the 274 became blocked soon thereafter.

Area residents who were interviewed noted that they weren’t surprised to hear that such an incident occurred. One person reported having previously seen close calls in the area. Another Mountain View man said that he’s previously requested a traffic signal at the intersection to help with the school congestion, especially when motorists are trying to make left turns.

A third resident said that the intersection is particularly difficult for motorists to navigate during rush hour and that she’s been nearly struck while trying to cross the street before.

Both motorists and pedestrians have their unique responsibilities out on the road. Individuals who are traveling on foot are supposed to wait for the appropriate signal, cross the road where it’s safe to do so, wear reflective clothing that makes them visible and look both ways before entering the roadway. Drivers are supposed to stay in their designated lanes and constantly scan the roadway for people or objects that may enter their path so that they can try and avoid them. If either party fails to uphold its obligations, then this can affect who is held accountable for a crash.

Determining liability isn’t easy. An experienced attorney will want to know about the events that led up to a crash occurring when trying to make sense of who’s liable for a crash. Your Redwood City lawyer may also call upon a California accident scene investigator to conduct additional analyses as well. It’s only after doing this that your attorney may advise you of your right to request compensation for your loved one’s wrongful death.
