How serious is drunk driving in California?

If you are like most people who live in California, you are aware that the state has often been a leader across the nation when it comes to pushing for tough penalties for drunk drivers. From the required use of an ignition interlock device to license revocations and more, the consequences associated with a driving under the influence conviction. Those realities, however, seem to be unable to prevent some people from making the choice to drive after consuming too much alcohol.

According to data provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, after recording 1,025 drunk driving deaths in 2008, the state saw a decline in alcohol-related fatalities for a few years reaching a low of 774 each year in both 2010 and 2011. That has sadly been on the rise and in 2016, deaths from DUI crashes once again surpassed 1,000 with 1,122 and then another 1,120 in 2017.

Between 2016 and 2017, overall traffic fatalities across California dropped from 3,837 to 3,602 but fatalities attributed to drunk driving accidents dropped by only two, meaning that drunk drivers were responsible for a greater percent of the statewide fatalities. In 2016, 29% of all vehicular deaths resulted from wrecks involving alcohol. In 2017, drunk driving accidents were responsible for 31% of all accident deaths in California, a higher percentage than in the previous four years.
