What should I do after an accident?

Even the safest California drivers may find themselves involved in a car accident at some point. This experience can be extremely stressful, especially when excessive property damage and injuries occur. While you can’t control the actions of other drivers, there are steps you take to make sure you get the help you need after an accident. U.S. News & World Report offers the following tips in this case.

Contact emergency services

When you or others are injured as a result of a crash, emergency services should be contacted immediately. Not only will personnel provide medical attention to those who need it, police can also provide help with traffic control, which will prevent further accidents from happening. If you can, try to move your vehicle to the side of the road while you wait for police. Also, be sure to put on your hazard lights to alert other motorists.

Gather information

When possible, try to document the scene the best you can. Take pictures of vehicle damage, as well as the location where the accident took place. You should also exchange insurance and contact information with any other drivers involved so you can report the accident properly. When police arrive, ask for a copy of the police report. This document can be very helpful when making an accident claim.

Talk with bystanders

If there are witnesses, take some time to speak with them. Witness testimony helps establish fault because it’s considered impartial. Bystanders may also be privy to a different angle on the accident, which is also enlightening. Make sure you take down the name and contact information for any witnesses you speak to. If your claim goes to court, these statements will be useful for determining fault and whether negligence was a factor.
