What is fatigued driving?

You have probably heard a lot about distracted driving and drunk driving in California. There are many campaigns to get the word out about how dangerous those things are. However, there is another common issue that can be just as dangerous as driving drunk or distracted. This is fatigued driving.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, fatigued driving is driving when you are too tired to focus properly. Being tired behind the wheel can be just as bad as doing other things you should not when driving. It leads to many accidents and even deaths. In fact, 846 people died in 2014 because of drivers who were drowsy behind the wheel.

One of the issues with fatigued driving is it is difficult to determine. An officer may notice someone driving erratically, but there is no test or other way to really determine if a person is too tired to drive. Furthermore, once an accident has happened, there is really no way to know if drowsiness played a factor unless one of the drivers admits to it.

While you may never dream of driving after drinking or using your cell phone when you are driving, the chances are pretty good you have gotten behind the wheel when you were sleepy. This is a huge problem because many people simply do not get enough sleep and have places they must get to. It is easy to underestimate the danger of driving when you are fatigued.
