How can medical malpractice cause Deep Vein Thrombosis?

One medical issue that often results in misdiagnosis is deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a condition that affects many people in the Redwood City area, especially patients who are left in the same position for too long or suffering from serious injury, pregnant and have other health conditions. It can also occur on its own. Untreated, it can cause painful swelling, skin discoloration, severe bruising, pulmonary embolism and other life-threatening conditions, states the Mayo Clinic.

Signs of Deep Vein Thrombosis

When patients go to their doctors complaining of pain, swelling, discomfort, they expect for them to assess their health and provide the correct diagnosis for treatment. Doctors who fail to identify the signs or take too long to provide a timely diagnosis and administer treatment risk their patients developing serious complications that jeopardize their lives. Some of them may die.

An example of how DVT can cause complications

Patients who must live with the aftermath of their doctors’ errors and negligence face difficult recoveries. For example, untreated clots that develop in the legs, abdomen and other affected areas of the body can make their way into the lungs, increasing the risk of pulmonary embolism and other dangerous complications. Pulmonary embolisms can interfere with proper blood flow in the lungs, robing the patient of oxygen. Patients who do not die from this type of scenario often develop brain damage.

Pulmonary embolisms can develop in other ways, but it is commonly caused by DVT. Patients who suspect their health complications are the result of misdiagnosis or errors in treatment may benefit from speaking to an attorney.
